- <p> DIED. HELEN O'CONNELL, 73, Big Band singer in the 1940s; of
- cancer; in San Diego. O'Connell and crooner Bob Eberly popularized
- the swing-era standards Tangerine and Green Eyes--the latter
- particularly noted for O'Connell's cool, limpid rendition of
- the lyrics. She began professionally at 16, joining the Jimmy
- Dorsey band in 1939. In the late '50s, she was co-host of the
- Today show with Dave Garroway. For nine years, she was Bob Barker's
- sidekick on the Miss Universe Pageant, and appeared in the "nostalgia"
- revue 4 Girls 4 alongside classic stars Rosemary Clooney and
- Margaret Whiting.
